Thousands of miles away, the upcoming American presidential election is a part of daily conversation here in Tanzania. It comes up mostly in religious settings - there is always a prayer asking God to pick the correct candidate, as the future of America so influences the future of the world. I love the context of being in Tanzania and praying to God for the wellbeing of America. It reminds me of American global relevance and fills me with national pride. It is so easy for foreign countries to blindly hate America in the present day that it relieves me to be reminded that the progress of my home country is critiqued, but also appreciated.
